Indian media issues false terror alert

MUMBAI: In a show of gross misreporting and anti-Pakistan propaganda the Indian media issued a news report claiming that three Pakistani nationals associated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)  had entered Mumbai and planned to carry out an attack similar to  2008 Mumbai attack, DawnNews reported.
The Times of India newspaper published a notification claiming to be based on the Indian intelligence authorities saying that three Pakistani nationals had entered Mumbai and were staying in disguise, planning to carry out an attack similar to those carried out in 2008.
The media channels broadcasted the pictures of three Pakistanis whom they had claimed to be terrorists but the alert turned out to be false when the three persons identified as terrorists in the Indian media turned up at Lahore’s Gulberg Police station to verify their locations after watching the news on the Indian channels.
The three persons are Lahori residents who work at Hafeez centre situated in Lahore. The persons were identified as Atif Butt and Mehtab Butt who are shop owners and the third person was identified as Babar Shakeel who works as a security guard in the shopping centre.
While talking to DawnNews the three Pakistani citizens said that the Indian media exhibited its anti-Pakistan sentiments by publishing their pictures.
Gulberg ASP Tariq Aziz told DawnNews that the initial report of the reported persons’ presence had been submitted in the police station and the matter would be forwared to the cyber-crime wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for further investigation and to ascertain how the Indian media got hold of the Pakistani national’s photographs.
Shopkeepers and traders of Hafeez centre held demonstrations in protest to the act of misreporting by the Indian media and said the protests would continue not only across Lahore but all over the country.
Pakistan may have to go back to IMF soon
KARACHI, May 9: Dr Kaiser Bengali, senior economist, said on Wednesday that Pakistan may have to go back to IMF in the coming months because of fast depleting foreign exchange reserves.
Speaking at a conference on sales tax on services — lessons learnt and way forward –, organized by the Sindh Revenue Board here on Wednesday, he forewarned that once Pakistan seeks IMF assistance, it may have to accept its conditions, particularly those which were not met in the past.
Dr Kaiser Bengali said in the past IMF had been demanding implementation of VAT system and in case Pakistan accepts, the federal government may take back sales tax on services from provinces.
He, however, suggested that sales tax on services be removed from the VAT and rate of tax be also reduced to half of the rate of tax on goods.
Only this way, he said provinces may retain sale tax on services.
Dr Ishrat Husain, Dean and Director IBA and ex-governor of State Bank of Pakistan, presiding over the first session of the conference said in Pakistan it was not only that the tax base is very narrow, it was equally alarming.
Citing an example, he said that in India average tax rate comes to around 17 per cent, but in Pakistan is it only 9 per cent.
Therefore, Dr Ishrat Husain said how could the country meet its defence budget, take up development projects and provide utilities such as gas, power and water and above all provide health facilities and road and rail network.
He further said that the other way for running the country is resorting to heavy borrowing, but no nation sustained or developed without generating its resources and revenue.
Revenue Board chairman Nazar Mehar, giving a brief history of Sindh Revenue Board said that the government of Sindh setup the board through Sindh Revenue Board Act, 2010 to administer collection of Sales Tax on services and assist in collection other provincial taxes through computerised application.
He said that the SBR during the last 10 months of its operations collected Rs19 billion against the target of Rs25 billion fixed for the current fiscal.
However, Mr Mehar said that around 1.5 billion towards services tax are still held back by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for July 2011.
Similarly, he said around Rs500 million towards adjustments are also due and SBR expects that the FBR would transfer these funds before the next budget.
