Corps commanders conference underway
RAWALPINDI: The corps commanders were meeting in Rawalpindi on
Thursday under the leadership of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq
Pervaiz Kayani, DawnNews reported. The conference at the General Headquarters (GHQ) was discussing the country’s internal security situation along with professional matters pertaining to the armed forces.
The military officers were meeting in the backdrop of overtures from the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) over holding talks with the government.
Also today, almost all mainstream political parties and representatives of bar associations are to meet in Islamabad at a multi-party conference organised by the Awami National Party (ANP) to devise a joint strategy to tackle the problem of terrorism.
On Feb 3, the TTP had expressed its willingness for talks but on two conditions — release of its seven leaders and guarantee by leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N), Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam – Fazl (JUI-F) and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) to make the exercise fruitful.
Security forces kill six attackers in
Bannu
BANNU: Pakistan police and security
forces shot dead six militants including four suicide bombers in retaliation
after scores of insurgents stormed a police station here on Thursday morning,
Geo News reported.
According to official sources, armed militants stormed
Miryan police station thinking the cops must be sleeping on the job, however, a
valiant counterattack dashed their hopes and at least six attackers were
killed.
A security official has also been injured in the attack.
The sources further said some insurgents were still present
in the police station and exchange of fire between militants and LEAs is
continuing.
