Karachi: Blast outside cable operator's
office kills three
KARACHI: At least three people including a policeman were killed in a
blast outside a cable operator's office here in Old Muzaffarabad Colony,
Landhi, Geo News reported.Earlier it was reported that a Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) had gone off outside a cable operator's office resulting in a number of casualties.
"Some people including the cable operators were around when the improvised explosive device planted in an auto rickshaw exploded in Khyber Market with Quaid-e-Abad Police Station at a stone's through", said initial reports.
SSP East, Imran Shaukat, told Geo News that it was not a VBIED but a Radio-controlled Improvised Explosive Device (RCIED) was used to hit the private cable operator's office.
"According to our information, the perpetrator(s) planted RDIED outside the target building and detonated it as soon as the bomb-planter cleared the explosion zone.
Talking to Geo News, an injured cable guy also gave a similar account.
"From inside our office we, through our main glass door, saw a man leaving a stuffed plastic shopping bag in front of our office. He was gone in no time. A coworker went outside to check it out. It exploded in his hands", said the traumatized worker.
The blast tore down the outer parts of some neighboring buildings while it also left a number of vehicles parked nearby almost wrecked.
Sources, quoting the emergency responders, said at least six of the injured were shifted to hospital after the blast.
Dr Simi Jamali, Deputy Executive Director, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC), confirmed the reception of three victims who were already dead. She also said that one of the dead was identified as Syed Muhammad Tahir. The bodies were shifted to the JPMC morgue.
There at the blast site the police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation.
According to bomb disposal unit's initial findings at least three kilograms of high-grade explosive with anti-personnel components packed around it was detonated to do the intended damage.
"We have found ball-bearings/nuts/bolts on and around the blast site, which confirms our convictions that the bombers wanted to target as many people as they could with the deadly shrapnel instead of trying to bring the buildings down", said they.
Earlier Thursday Karachi police said they had shot dead a Tehrik-e-Taliban militant commander suspected over the killing of a prominent woman development worker.
Parveen Rehman, 56, who was known for her work in impoverished neighborhoods, was killed by motorcycle gunmen in the city as she drove home from work Wednesday.
Police also said they had Thursday arrested six Taliban militants from the city's southern and western neighborhoods and seized explosives and weapons.
"Those arrested included Bashir Ullah, who was a mastermind of the deadly bombing in Abbas Town neighborhood," senior police official Shahid Hayat said, referring to the explosion in the Shiite neighborhood on March 3 that killed 50 people.
